How do you work with your personal assistant?
There’s no doubting that a PA can make a huge difference to an executive’s day-to-day life. From sorting out their diaries to organising travel, managing expenses and filtering inboxes, hiring a personal assistant can go a long way in freeing up your time and allowing you to focus on other matters.
However, Tiger’s latest research has revealed the differences in how male and female bosses work with their PAs. Our survey of 600 executives revealed a number of surprising statistics, namely the increased impact PAs have on the lives of female bosses.
There wasn’t much between female and male bosses when it came to hiring a PA: 52% of the surveyed female executives had one, compared to 48% of men.
From there on in, there was a number of differences.
- 30% of male bosses have a male PA, compared to 8% of female bosses
- Female bosses are more likely to hire a PA earlier in their career – 22% say they did within a year, while 31% hired a PA within 1-2 years. Just 15% of men hired a PA within the first year, while 16% hired within the first 1-2 years.
- 10% of female bosses spend 41-50 hours with their PA week to week, while just 4% of male bosses do the same.
- 21% of female bosses say their PA saves them between 10-30 hours a week, while 16% of male bosses say the same.
- It therefore makes sense that the PAs of female bosses were more likely to help to reduce their life admin and helped with stress – 29% of interviewed female executives found having a PA improved their wellbeing, compared to 20% of men.
What does this mean for PA recruitment?
Tiger’s research reveals that both female and male bosses aren’t using their PAs as effectively as they should be! Therefore, when recruiting a PA, think about the scope of responsibility that you can pass on. Could you hand over a project for them to oversee? Do you need to monitor your inbox every day, or could your PA do it? Taking the time to assess how you’re spending your day will give you a framework from which you can allocate tasks. If your PA is overwhelmed, maybe it’s time to think about hiring a second administrator?
